Hormones play an essential role in keeping our bodies functioning smoothly. From regulating energy and mood to supporting sleep and reproductive health, they act as messengers that keep everything in balance. However, when our hormones are out of sync, it can feel like an uphill battle—those pesky mood swings, disrupted sleep, irregular cycles, or stubborn skin issues may leave us feeling out of sync with our body. The good news? Nature offers us a treasure trove of remedies that gently and effectively support our hormones.
In my own journey, I’ve struggled with hormonal imbalance. This inspired me to study and explore the incredible role herbs can play in restoring balance. Here, I’ll share some of my favourite herbal allies to support women’s hormonal health and guide you on incorporating them into your routine.

Understanding Hormonal Imbalance
Hormones are chemical messengers that regulate almost every process in your body—metabolism, mood, sleep, and reproduction, to name a few. When even one hormone is out of balance, it can throw your entire system off-kilter. Common culprits include:
Stress: Elevated cortisol can disrupt oestrogen, progesterone, and thyroid hormone levels.
Diet: Poor nutrition or excessive sugar and caffeine intake can wreak havoc on insulin and sex hormones. Additionally, constipation may contribute to hormonal imbalances, as the body struggles to eliminate excess hormones effectively. Ensuring adequate fibre intake is key to supporting healthy digestion and hormone regulation.
Sleep: Inadequate rest impairs the delicate dance between hormones like melatonin and cortisol.
Poor Liver Function: Hormones are metabolised in the liver and impaired liver function can slow this down.
The key to hormonal health lies in addressing these root causes while supporting the body’s natural healing mechanisms.
Chaste Berry (Vitex Agnus-castus): The Hormone Whisperer
Vitex is a superstar for balancing oestrogen and progesterone. It’s particularly helpful for irregular cycles, PMS, and symptoms of perimenopause. This herb works by gently influencing the pituitary gland, your hormone control centre.
How to use: Try Vitex as a tincture or capsule, but be patient—it often takes 3–6 months for full effects.
Ashwagandha (Withania Somnifera): The Stress Soother
As an adaptogen, ashwagandha helps your body adapt to stress, lowering cortisol and promoting balance in sex hormones. It’s also known to support thyroid function and improve energy.
How to use: Mix ashwagandha powder into a warm latte or take it as a capsule or tincture.
Schisandra (Schisandra chinensis): The Beauty Berry
Schisandra berries are adaptogens rich in antioxidants that support liver detoxification. A healthy liver is essential for processing and eliminating excess hormones like oestrogen, making this herb a go-to for clear skin and balanced cycles.
How to use: Schisandra can be enjoyed as a tea, tincture, or added to smoothies.
Milk Thistle (Carduus marianus): The Detoxifier
This liver-loving herb enhances your body’s ability to clear out hormone disruptors, such as environmental toxins and excess oestrogen.
How to use: Take milk thistle as a tea, tincture, or capsule for a gentle yet effective detox.
Lifestyle Tips for Lasting Balance
While herbs are invaluable, they work best as part of a holistic approach. Consider these small but impactful changes:
Eat for your hormones: Focus on whole foods rich in healthy fats, fibre, and protein. Avoid processed foods, sugar, and caffeine.
Avoid environmental toxins: Eat organic if possible. Avoid BPAs in plastic bottles, receipts, etc.
Move mindfully: Gentle exercises like yoga or walking can lower cortisol and improve circulation.
Prioritise sleep: Aim for 7–8 hours of quality rest each night to allow your body to reset.
When to Seek Help
If you’re dealing with persistent hormonal issues, consider working with a healthcare professional. A qualified herbalist can help tailor a plan to your unique needs, incorporating herbs, diet, and lifestyle adjustments.
